Paphos and the Kato Paphos Archaeological Site

Paphos is a Mediterranean coastal town in the southwest of Cyprus and is the capital of Paphos District. Paphos is centred around the picturesque little harbour (Kato Paphos) where you can watch the world go by in the open-air cafes and restaurants along the quayside; just across the water lies a 16th century Venetian fortress.

There is an abundance of restaurants in Paphos and the surrounding area to suit all tastes and budget. Why not try a traditional Cypriot Meze (comprising of up to 20 dishes of local food); you will find many restaurants and tavernas which offer a meze among other local specialities. Many have a traditional ‘Cyprus Night’ which will involve a full meze as well as a folk dance show. Don’t forget to try the local Keo Beer, a world class lager which will be very welcome after a day in the sun!

Near Palaepaphos (Old Paphos) at the seaside of Petra tou Romiou is the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty and the founding myth is interwoven with the goddess at every level, so that Old Paphos became the most famous and important place for worshipping Aphrodite in the ancient world. In Greco-Roman times Paphos was the island's capital, and it is famous for the remains of the Roman governor's palace, where extensive, fine mosaics are a major tourist attraction. The apostle Paul of Tarsus visited the town during the 1st century AD. The town of Paphos is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of the world's heritage.

Paphos enjoys a Subtropical-Mediterranean climate. The typical summer's season lasts about 8 months, from April to November, although also in March and December sometimes there are temperature above 20 °C (68.0 °F).

This figure has been put up down near the swimming area. Not seen anybody catch a fish as big as that
